Pentesters occasionally attack non-critical systems for fun and they may choose servers which are vulnerable to no. 1 or no. 2. A simple vulnerability like this can expose some interesting details, such as the presence of a weak SSL/TLS server in a small company, or the presence of a misconfigured webserver.
The motivation for a pentester to crack a website, besides bragging rights, is that the attack can generate revenue for a third party. This is well-known and a part of the arms race between hackers and defenders.
A good defensive strategy is to use a protocol which is relatively secure, but not widely used, like SSL/TLS, so that attackers need to crack it for a long time before it can be used by a lot of sites.
A cracking attempt to OpenSSL (the SSL/TLS protocol) is quite popular in the news, because it was demonstrated that the same attack can be used on a website, which is exactly why it was featured in the September 2016 issue of SC Magazine !
Both of them allow you to get the IP address of the SSL client, which is useful to connect to the website and gain access to the login form. At the next stage, they both seem to use a standard point and click attack tool. When exploited, this tool requires a admin password to run. The easiest way to crack it is to use registry editing .
Our best advice is:
Monitor your site always to avoid unplanned downtime
Update your plugins or themes and plugins as soon as they are released to avoid the risk of an attacker with a cracked version
Learn about the security of the plugins or themes you download and get advice from a security expert to find a reputable website where they are developed
To get a regular WordPress version (not cracked) you will have to pay, but you will get the support and the update. By buying a premium version, you get access to the source code of the plugin. If you trust the plugins author, you can download the source code and extend the plugin to your needs.
