I remember the first library I bought for myself. I'll never forget it, it was a complete compilation of John Christopher's Stand on Mars. It was the same size as a magazine - a real change from the more traditional comics format. The cover art for the book was by Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons - I was hooked.
What happened to it? I can only guess that they must have been on the ropes by the end and folded. The semi-regular publication of the DC Thomson Library, published in both the UK and the USA, kept them going for a few more years. It's an interesting concept - American comics have always come to the UK with a few months delay, and the British are always well ahead of the Americans. This seemed like a sensible approach to the major publishers - they didn't have to compete with their competition across the pond.
I remember coming home from school and finding the library out, but my Dad would tell me there'd been a fire at the shop and they'd not been able to get all the books out. I didn't believe him - surely I'd seen the signs of a fire at the shop?
The end must have come soon after a similar decision in the 1960s by DC Thomson that, with the expansion of the comic market in the 80s, created comics for all tastes. That's where our modern comics formats came from. They must have had the right idea, but the timing was wrong.
It's amazing how the comics industry has changed in this country in the last 50 years. It wasn't so long ago we were publishing comics for the newspaper readership on a weekly basis, with a huge amount of reprint material with every issue. There was even a time when comics were a newspaper monopoly. Then, as the publishers realised the possibilities of a new market, the industry split itself off from the rest of the newspaper industry and dived into the world of TV and children's comics. In that time, some of the best writers and artists in the industry have been coming from this country. It started with the giants of the industry like Alan Moore and Alan Davis, but it's moved on to the likes of Garth Ennis, Grant Morrison, Warren Ellis and Mark Millar.
