Following the release of The Mouse and the Mask in 2001, DOOM would vanish off the scene, but return four years later with the surprise release of The Funky Cold Medina. This would be his first release without Danger Mouse (the two had already collaborated on the Mm... Food and I Remember albums) and, despite some popular hits like Hey Ho Let's Go! and Awfulsomeness, it was a disappointment that didn't do well on the charts. It would be his last album released under his alias Zev Love X. Ten years later, in 2011, he released the now out-of-print Back From The Dead as Gary, Dumile and Kane with Oneohtrix Point Never, a collection of beats named after Gary, Dumile and Kane and produced by Oneohtrix Point Never and Ghostface Killah. The following year, he released Blackest Ever Black as Zev Love X. A mysterious, retro-futuristic concept album, it was received with much criticism and its extreme lo-fi production was not to the liking of many. It would be his last release for almost seven years, until last year's The Devil's Particle and in 2019, DOOM released Rage, a more polished and mainstream rock album that would go on to top the Billboard 200, selling over 250,000 copies in its first week of release.
The Mouse and the Mask offers a new version of the good old days of DOOM, a bit more controlled and polished. It takes fans through all of the best elements that made him one of the greatest rappers of all time, and also gives them a character that isn't quite as outlandish as before. That character is a far cry from the Zev Love X character, but the album is a return to the more hip-hop mentality of the original KMD. It doesn't sound quite as hard as before but there's a drive in it that is familiar to fans of the group. It's not your father's KMD.
The Mouse and the Mask is a favorite of many underground emcees, and is consistently regarded as a catalogue of childhood memories. With the release of the full album on vinyl, we are proud to give some old-school vinyl heads a chance to relive the glory days of hip-hop.
Since the release of The Mouse and the Mask, DOOM has continued to deal with the loss of his brother, and his death has had a long-lasting impact on him and his work. In 2017, DOOM's third studio album and first release in almost a decade, Mr. Mister, was named one of the best albums of the year by Rolling Stone.
In the time since DOOM released The Mouse and the Mask, he has released four albums and collaborated with a number of artists. House Party, released this past July, his first album in five years, and the first with long time collaborator Terrence Thornton on production duties, marks a return to his more honed and experimental style. This time around, DOOM is collaborating with Vic Mensa, Alicia Keys, Tinashe, Future, Curtis Mayfield, T-Pain, Robin Thicke, and Shyheim. In the process, he has crafted the greatest album of his career. 827ec27edc
